Hey Beauties!
I know i haven't done one of these posts in ages but i think I've found the perfect products to compare. If you didn't know you would probably think they were the same product, I actually never meant to find this product i just came upon it one day when i was in New Look and i had a light bulb moment that it looked so much like the Smashbox Contour Palette.
First, we have the inexpensive option Pure Colour Contour Palette, which is only £5.99 from New Look and to be honest, I really can't see much difference between this palette and the Smashbox palette. They are both finely milled powders, both feel really silky and smooth. The only real difference I can see is that the contour shade in the New Look palette is a bit cooler than the Smashbox one which to be honest is actually better because when contouring you want a really cool toned brown to create that shadow. Both Palettes come with 3 colours: a contour powder, a bronzer and highlighter both of which are yellow toned.
The Smashbox Step by Step Contour Kit (Full Review Here) is £35 comes in 3 different colours: a deep brown contour which isn't super cool toned but still makes a great contour, a bronze and yellow toned highlighter. This is my contour of choice when doing makeup its either this or Harmony by MAC that I will use. The only real difference to this palette is that it comes with a small angled brush to apply the product which is ok to use, but I like using my own brushes for this, also you will notice the little help sheet in the mirror which shows you how to apply the product which isn't in the New Look palette.
As with all Save or Splurge posts i always say i'm not saying one is better than the other because in all honesty they are both really similar almost the same product. The purpose of Save or Splurge is to show you a dupe of a product so that if you can't afford the Smashbox palette there is always the New Look palette for you but also if you want the Smashbox palette go right ahead.

The biggest difference i can see between both palettes is really the price, there is £29 difference.
You can find the New Look Pure Colour Contour Palette in New Look store and online at newlook.com for £5.99. You can find the Smashbox Step by Step Contour Kit at all Smashbox counters and online at smashbox.co.uk for £35*
On your hand the colours on the left look better for me which i take is Smashbox as other side looks a tad orange. Both very nice though and great comparison xxxx :)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how similar they both look! Only due to the price I'm gonna try out the New Look one, Smashbox is just a bit too out of my budget. I would love to try the brand one day though, would it be worth saving up for some of their pieces?
ReplyDeleteThe swatches look a little bit different but like you said, generally cooler shades are better for contouring anyway! Great find x

I'll definitely be looking out for the Newlook palette x

The New Look one sounds like a great palette for the money! With only three shades I think this is one I'd take with me travelling though rather than my go to. My fav has to be the ABH contour palette!

So many high street brands getting into the make-up game now. It's quite refreshing, I've got so many contour palettes now but what's a few more x
ReplyDeleteWow, they look the same! You can only see the difference from the swatches and one of them do looks a bit too orange. I'm the not happy owner of a very light pale skin and I need cool colours so I'll check the New Look palette on my next visit in their shop. :)
ReplyDeleteWow the similarity is uncanny! Thanks for sharing :)

I can't get over how similar they are! I've always been a bit frightened by the idea of contouring, but at a bargain it could be worth a wee experiment...
ReplyDeleteThis was very interesting and a good find. The swatches do look a little bit different but it is to be expected. I should see if I can order the Newlook palette in France and try it.

Perfect post for me as I'm currently on the lookout for a powder contour palette, and the Smashbox contour shade looks a bit warm! Thanks for sharing your thoughts

I love this type of post! I've admired the Smashbox Contour Palette for a while, but not yet purchased it. I think the shades in the New Look palette would suit me better though! I definitely gravitate towards a cooler tone for contour. It's great that these two are similar in terms of quality. I'll be checking the ingredients of the New Look palette & swatching it when I'm next in a store. Xx
